Renee Simpson, Commander of the Wisconsin VFW, talks about why SB 13 is troubling legislation for veterans.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Wisconsin is ranked 14th in the nation on asbestos deaths from malignant mesothelioma, a rare, incurable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Recently, legislation – Senate Bill 13 – was introduced that would create new hardship for asbestos cancer victims.

Madison, Wis. – Today, in a private ceremony, Gov. Walker ignored the plea of veterans and asbestos victim advocates and signed into law Assembly Bill 19, a bill that would create hurdle after hurdle for asbestos victims seeking justice and reduce compensation for asbestos victims.  AB 19 eliminates accountability for corporations who knowingly exposed veterans and Wisconsin workers to deadly asbestos. This bill is opposed by the Wisconsin American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. These three groups represent more than 100,000 Wisconsin veterans.  A number of labor, faith and senior groups also opposed this bill.
